Let’s face it: there are a lot of drawbacks to winter. The cold, the slush, the hassle of tights, the whole problem of getting into a chilly car in your coat but then once the heat is on, you’re sweltering.
However, there are also some bright spots in the wintertime, and one of them is scarves! They’re fun, colorful, and an easy way of expressing your creativity and style. Here are 5 ideas for chic ways to tie your scarf this winter.
- The Classic Wrap-around
This one is easy to master, and particularly good for short scarves:
How to do it:
- Hold the scarf lengthwise behind you
- Twist one side once around your neck
- Let the rest fall
- Adjust the length
- The French Knot
This one is a bit more advanced but totally worth it. You’ll need a longer scarf for it:

How to do it:
- Fold the scarf in half lengthwise and loop it behind your head so one side has the “hole” and the other has the two loose ends
- Take one loose end and go over the loop and then back under
- Take the second loose end and go under the loop, then back over
It’s easier than it looks, and you can always adjust the length.
- The “endless” scarf:
This one never fails to look elegant and put together:
How to do it:
- Use a long scarf
- Loop it twice around your neck, fairly tightly
- Tie the loose ends in a half knot
- Tuck the knot up under the scarf loops to hide it
You can also purchase scarves like these that have no loose ends at all, saving yourself the trouble of the nip/tuck bit.
- The Necklace
This one is particularly lovely with a lighter colored scarf that contrasts with the rest of your outfit:

How to do it:
- Hold your scarf all the way out so that it forms a large rectangle
- Take two caddy-corner ends and tie them together
- Place the large loop over your head and make one more loop around.
- The Double Trouble
Got two scarves you really like and want to wear both? Bet you never thought you could. Well, you can! You can either do complementary or contrasting colors for an extra pop:
