If you're having trouble motivating and following through with your New Year's Resolution, follow these steps to set a specific, achievable goal—and beat the Resolution blues!

  1. Step 1: Sit down and really think about what motivates you and what matters to you. Whatever your goal or resolution is, if it’s not important to you (or won’t make a difference in your life), it’s not worth achieving.
  2. Step 2: Come up with specific goals and resolutions. Instead of, I want to lose weight by the end of this year, think, I want to lose 20 pounds by June. The more specific your goal is, the easier it will be to measure and track. Being able to measure and track your progress can help motivate you in your resolution journey. *Keep in mind: Your goals should be specific, but they should also be attainable. In other words, set goals you know you can reach with some hard work and determination. Setting goals that are impossible or unreachable won’t do anything but discourage you in the long run*
  3. Step 3: Write down your goals and resolutions. Tell them to friends and family. Set reminders and alarms on your phone. Put post-its everywhere. Visually reminding yourself of your goal will reinforce the importance of it, and remind you of the difference it will make in your life. Sharing your goals and resolutions with others adds a layer of accountability—not wanting to disappoint your loved ones will add another source of motivation.
  4. Step 4: Come up with a plan. Setting a goal without a plan of action is pretty much useless. Instead, come up with a plan of action or a set of steps to help you reach your goals. For instance, if your goal is to save $1,000 by the end of the year, plan to set aside $100 per month ($100 is much less overwhelming and easier to imagine than $1,000). Breaking goals down into manageable chunks or stages can mean the difference between achieving them and abandoning your resolutions before February.
  5. Step 5: Reward yourself. When you reach or pass a milestone, reward yourself. Small rewards will motivate you to tackle the next milestone.
